Information for (dog) walkers

2007MemorialDayParade

For the fourth year in a row, Somerville dog owners will honor our veterans by walking our dogs in the City's Memorial Day Parade, Sunday, May 25, 2008.

Dogs that enjoy the company of other dogs, that are licensed and up-to-date on vaccinations, that walk well on a loose leash* and that are in good physical condition are welcome! *The Somerville leash law requires dogs to on a leash no more than six feet long.

For public relations purposes, som|dog requires that every person who walks a dog in the Parade walk with only one dog. If you have two dogs, bring a friend to walk one of your dogs!

Remember to carry water for your dog (and for yourself!). dogma (and catma, too) has Cool Pooch sport water bottles that allow you and your dog to drink from the same bottle without backwash!

Remember to bring plastic baggies and to clean up after your dog.

The parade route is 2.25 miles. It begins at 1:00 at City Hall, follows Highland Avenue to Davis Square, then Holland Street to Teele Square and proceeds along Broadway to Veterans Memorial Cemetery at Clarendon Hill.

Not everyone and not every dog can walk the whole route, especially if it is a warm day. If you and your dog cannot walk the whole route, you may join a group of reinforcements who will file in with som|dog when we get to Davis Square.

You may also pull out of the parade at any time if you or your dog is uncomfortable.

Getting to the Parade

  • Walkers are responsible for their own transportation to and from the parade.
  • There is parking at the end of the parade route at Dilboy Stadium. The City will run shuttle busses from the Dilboy Stadium lot to City Hall in the morning before the parade.
  • There will be NO PARKING at City Hall on the day of the parade.

Suggested Donation: Walkers are encouraged to donate $5 to the City of Somerville's Memorial Day Fund. Donations will be collected on the day of the Parade.

For more information and for the meet-up times and locations to walk in the Parade with the Somerville Dog Owners Group from City Hall or from Davis Square, please contact Michele at michelebiscoe * AT * somervilledog.com; 617-290-9107.

somdog thanks our partners in the Memorial Day Parade. Our partners will be helping carry the som|dog banner and pull the waggin' wagon with extra water for our dogs, so that Somerville dog owners can have our hands free to walk our dogs in the Parade!
